Effect of donor preservation solution and survival in lung transplantation

Marasco SF, Bailey M, McGlade D, Snell G, Westall G, Oto T and Pilcher D.

This retrospective review of 310 consecutive lung transplantations studied the impact of the preservation solution on primary graft dysfunction (PGD) and mortality. Patients were grouped according to donor organ preservation solution, either Euro-Collins (n=140), Papworth solution (n=63) or Perfadex (n=104). The use of Perfadex for donor lung preservation was associated with a significant reduction in severe PGD at 48 hours compared with both Euro-Collins and Papworth solution (OR 0.23; p=0.008). Also, Papworth solution was associated with significantly increased mortality compared with both Euro-Collins and Perfadex preservation solutions (OR 2.36; p=0.01).
