In 2016, the Netherlands implemented hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP) as the standard of care preservation method for all types of deceased donor kidneys. By collecting data from the Dutch Organ Transplantation Registry, this study aimed at assessing the effect of standard HMP on early transplantation outcomes. All deceased donor kidneys transplanted in the Netherlands between Jan 2016 and Dec 2017 were included in this retrospective study, resulting in 555 HMP-treated kidneys included in the per-protocol analysis. The study demonstrates that, when compared to a historical cohort of non-HMP treated kidneys, HMP significantly reduces both the incidence (37.8% vs 43.7%; p<0.001) and duration (7 vs 9 days; p=0.005) of delayed graft function (DGF).
